Overview

Located at the foot of the Atacazo Volcano. It has an area of 32.26 square kilometers. Its etymology is: CU = large, TUG = all, LA = resplendent, HUA = pot. A large and glowing pot for everyone. Their lands were previously part of the large haciendas located south of Quito; Its vigorous growth reflects the tenacity and work capacity of its people who for different reasons traveled from different parts of the country and settled in this cozy parish.

Atacazo Volcano

To arrive at the top of this volcano, travel to the “Unidad de Equitación y Remonta” (horse-mounted police officers) in the Tambillo Parish. Then travel up to the neighborhood “Miraflores Alto,” and continue 30 minutes along the road in a 4×4 vehicle. Finally, ascend hiking for approximately one hour, reaching an altitude of 4,750m.

Atacazo features a caldera of 6km in diameter, whose eroded cone shape is proof of 2,300-year-old activity. Admire its grand beauty during the rainy months, when, after a storm, the peak is covered in snow. Hiking to the top is considered at medium difficulty.
