This parish is located in the foothills of the volcano “Corazón,” at an altitude of 2,922m, 35km distance from Quito. It is a strategically populated location, as a principle passageway between the Coast and the Highland regions.
Historians describe that Alóag means, “spoiled little girl,” and in the Caribbean language, “extended land.” The parish is the oldest in Mejía Canton. As with all the parishes of the canton, agriculture and livestock vocations have allowed the people’s economic development. This parish is especially exemplary in the production and commercial sale of “allullas” (traditional savory cookie), as well as milk-based products like yogurt and dulce de leche.
Cerro La Viudita
After the toll station of the Alóag – Santo Domingo road, travel along the cobblestone road and dirt path. Here, you will discover a historic battle site, chosen for its strategic location. “La Viudita” mountain (altitude 3,783m) was witness to the Spanish troops’ fight, who should have avoided the arrival of the forces of the Liberators from Quito. This is battleground of the famous Pichincha Battle, on May 24th, 1822.
Reserva Natural Bombolí
The entrance to the Hacienda Plantation Forest Bombolí is found at Kilometer 20 along the Alóag – Santo Domingo road. It is based on the coastal border of the western-lying mountain range, between 2,700 and 3,450 meters above sea level. The averge temperature of the area in 13 ºC during the rainy season, and 25 ºC during dry season.
In the forest, flora such as Aliso, Pumamaqui, Podocarpus, and more may all be observed.
Popular del Señor de Casanto
This is a sculpture formed in a Casanto tree. According to many versions of its origin, it is over 250 years old. It is now found protected in the atrium of the church, Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Asunción de Alóag.
