Overview of Mejía Canton
Mejía is know as “The Valley of 9 Volcanoes.” It is aptly named for the 9 elevations that surround our fertile land, filled with friendly and hardworking people. Only one hour from the capital city of Quito, Ecuador, visitors here enjoy mountains, natural mineral springs, waterfalls, the traditional ``Chagra`` culture, farms, diverse gastronomy, lush flora and fauna, high quality agricultural and livestock products, and several attractions that will prove to be totally satisfying. The Canton offers interesting and attractive places to visit, thanks to its territorial distribution into three geographical regions: the high-altitude mountains, where the highland ecosystem flourishes with easy access to the beautiful mountains, and where the “Chagra” (“Knight of the Andes”) cares for the cattle; the valley of fertile land, where picturesque estates not only thrive with agricultural activities, but now also open their doors to tourism; and the subtropical zone between the Alóag and Manuel Cornejo Astorga parishes, teeming with a natural wealth of more than 300 species of orchids, wildlife, beautiful and cristal-clear waterfalls, and a tropical climate. The Mejía Canton offers tourist facilities such as hotels, hostels, restaurants of both national and international cuisine, and recreational activities like trekking, cycling, horseback riding, and more.
