Aloasí is located in the skirts of the Corazón volcano, 2.5km to the west of Machachi. Its surface extends over 68.03km2; at its center is located the railway station named “La Estación,” previously known as “Huasinillo.” It is believed that the word “Aloasí” comes from the predecessing Caribbean “a-boa Zic-la,” or, “house of the prince;” this parish was the seat of legislation (prince) of the ancient Panzaleo people, of the Aylluasigz tribe.
Every Saturday in the month of May, at 4:00am, those of the Sanctuary “Nuestra Señora de los Dolores” (“Our Lady of Sorrows”) gather to pray the Holy Rosary.

This is a religious edification built in 1942, cataloged as part of our National Patrimony. The principle celebration is held on September 15th, in honor of Our Lady of Sorrows. Another celebration that tradition marks in honor of the Virgin is on the Friday of Sorrows, previous to Palm Sunday.
El Corazón Volcano
To arrive at El Corazón, take the South Panamerican highway and enter through La Estación train station in Aloasí Parish. Continue in a 4×4 vehicle for at least 40 minutes. From this point, ascending to the peak requires a roughly 4-hour hike. You will then reach an altitude of 4,788m.
Surprise yourself with the crater of this inactive volcano, located to south-west of Machachi. It has turned into a deep ravine that forms the Negro river. In the foothills of the mountain lies the small hill called “La Moya.”
